Fair Play

Instead of playing Dance Central for Family Fun Friday, this week Taylor, Sym and I went to The Fair at the PNE. It was pretty much the most fun ever; we ended up staying for five hours! We saw the Superdogs, ate all the things, played some games, went on some rides… I think it was the most fun I’ve ever had there!

Sno-Cones

Sno-cones! I had rainbow and Sym had lime. Taylor had cherry but we didn’t take a picture of it.

We got the big bag of little donuts.

Poutine Hotdog

It was kind of hard for me to find non-sugary stuff to eat since I’m not eating meat, but Taylor enjoyed this poutine hotdog with fries, bacon, cheese, green onions and gravy.

Deep-fried Oreos

Deep-fried Oreos! I also got a deep-fried Pop-Tart with whipped cream, Fruity Pebbles and rainbow sprinkles but the picture disappeared from my phone, LAME. EDIT THE PICTURE UNDISAPPEARED YAY!

Waiting for Superdogs to start. I tried to take a picture of Sym and Taylor but he made a ridiculous face, and I’m nice so I’m not going to post it on the internet.

Our very own Li’l Sebastian! There was also a mini-donkey but I couldn’t get a picture of her.

Fluffy-Footed Pigeons

There were all kinds of fancy pigeons; I liked these fluffy-footed ones the best.

My only complaints were:
1. There were NO deep-fried jelly beans this year! The website said there was so I was very disappointed.
2. Both Taylor and Sym are chickens so neither of them would go on the roller coaster or ferris wheel with me. Sym would only go on the kiddie rides and Taylor wouldn’t go on anything! Hopefully next year Sym is a little braver, she’s already tall enough to go on everything so she just needs to courage up!

Huge Post of Epicness

I thought about doing a bunch of separate posts with all the stuff I’ve been meaning to blog about this week, but then I though EFF IT so now you get this huge post of epicness! Enjoy!

Popsicles!

Popsicle Party Banner

First of all, even though I haven’t been posting them, I HAVE been making popsicles.

Orange Popsicle

Fresh squeezed orange juice popsicles! These were Sym’s pick, and quite delicious, although A LOT of work.

Blackberry Smoothie Popsicle

Leftover blackberry smoothie popsicles! I made these with the smoothie that Sym didn’t finish and I accidentally almost turned into jam.

Cherry Popsicle

Super-sweet cherry syrup popsicles! I don’t remember what I made this cherry syrup for, I think I just had some cherries that were getting old? WHO KNOWS? I think I must have put in a ton of sugar though, these were INTENSELY SWEET.

Arts & Crafts!
I’ve been making some really fantastic glitter banners and friendship bracelets recently. I did a Sailor Moon-themed craft swap with Rhiannon, and made her a banner of Luna, Diana and Artemis’ heads

Sailor Moon Cat Glitter Banner

… and Outer Senshi friendship bracelets.

Sailor Senshi Bracelets

I’m very excited to see what she’s made for me, so look for a post on that in the future!

I’m also really pleased with the banner I made for my friend Sonia, which has her name in Hindi. I’ve had people ask me before why I don’t use pre-cut letters and shapes for my banners, and this is why.

Sonia

Don’t forget to “like” my shop on facebook and remember, there’s less than a week left to get 15% off your order with the code UNICORN15

With the other friendship bracelets I’ve made recently, I’ve been experimenting with metallic embroidery floss. It’s tricky to use- you have to knot it fairly tightly and that tends to make the bracelets curl up on themselves. I’ve found using a mix of half-metallic and half-regular works best.

Metallic Friendship Bracelets

The blue and silver one on the right was my favourite, but I lost it on Wednesday night, cry cry. Hopefully someone found it and gave it a good home!

Sym's Mini Arm Party

These I made for Sym, you can see here that I put chains and clasps on them instead of just tying them on, except I’m not super adept at it yet and they sometimes fall apart (which is how I think I lost my blue one). I still have a couple more that I made for myself, a purple and gold one, and an all-gold one with vintage aurora borealis crystal and gold-tone metal filigree beads (the later aren’t visible), pictured here with my silver Tiffany bracelet and my brand-new and amazing evil eye bracelet from Hippie Speedball.

Vacation!
Seeing as how I’ve been on vacation this week, I managed to find time for a quick getaway to New York.

Me in New York

OH WAIT NO I DIDN’T. But while I was out shopping on Wednesday I stumbled across my absolutely favorite show in the history of tv being filmed. THAT’S RIGHT, FRINGE!! Unfortunately there was no Joshua Jackson BUT I stood across the street like a giant dork and took pictures of Anna Torv and John Noble, aka Olivia Dunham and Walter Bishop, shooting a short scene where they walked fifty feet up Burrard street. Over and over again. tbh working on a tv show looks boring as hell.

Walter & Olivia

Vancouver Canadians!

Sunset Over Nat Bailey Stadium

Later that Day Taylor and I headed out to Nat Bailey Stadium (or I guess it’s now Scotiabank Field and Nat Bailey Stadium? Whatever) to catch a Canadians game. We’d been a couple of times before, but this was the first time I’d ever paid for tickets, and they are super affordable. Unfortunately the season is basically over, but next summer I definitely want to go to more games. If you are like me and like sports you can scream at while you drink beer, then this is definitely for you.

Taylor Turns 32!

Happy Birthday Taylor Banner

Of course, this weeks most important event was yesterday, when my darling and adorable husband celebrated his thirty-second birthday. He’s been working from home this week, so he slept for most of the day while Sym and I baked and hung decorations.

Cake and PresentsSparklers!

This is the second layer cake I’ve made (the first was the rainbow cake earlier this summer) and it turned out really well! I still need to work on making my icing look pretty, but the inside was SPECTACULAR.

Blue Gradient Cake

We had a yummy dinner of our traditional Thursday night poutine & Dr Peppers, then presents, then cake & milk, and after Sym went to bed, tv shows and beer.

The Birthday Man

Love him ♥

Anyway, that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to this week! On Monday it back to work for me (incidentally, today is the fifth anniversary of Starlight Family Childcare! Also the longest I’ve ever held a job, haha), but at least I still have this afternoon and the weekend of freedom left!

Cat's Pissed

Happy Friday! (But not from Claire, she hates everything.0

Canadia!

I wanted to post this sooner but SOMEONE takes eight thousand years to upload pictures.
How Taylor and I spent our nation’s birthday:

Kelly, the Jellybeans

He bought me french vanilla, apple and pomegranate jellybeans.

Canadian Husband

This is the only picture I managed to get of Taylor in his outer layer of Canada Day regalia, aka a Team Canada jersey. It turned out really warm so he stripped down to his inner Canadian layer, a CBC t-shirt.

Canadian Husband

In addition to my super sweet nails I wore a red shirt of Taylor’s and my denim jacket with some jean shorts. That’s right, a Canadian tuxedo. I totally rocked it, too.

Devil Dog

Georgie got very grubby at the park and needed a bath. When she’s all wet her nefarious evil really shows.

fireworksandcauldron

We finished the day watching the fireworks from beside the Olympic cauldron, which is now a fountain. It was a true Vancouver moment, from the crazy guy in the fountain gathering up all the coins to the group of drunken international students next to us talking in like, four different languages. Such is the mosaic, amirite, Canadians?

Last Day of School

Today is Sym’s last day of fourth grade. The year started out a little rocky- she moved from the Annex school, which is only about a hundred students K-3, to the main school, which is 400 student K-7. She was pretty nervous at first, not wanting to make new friends and struggling with her work a little (her first report card this year was her worst ever). She pulled it together, made lots of new friends and received certificates for fine arts achievements and her science fair project earlier this year, and at the end of the year awards ceremony she got two more, for good citizenship and the honour roll.

Last Day of School

here she is on the first day of school

Her dad and I usually buy her a little end-of-school gift, so this year I picked out a new book, and some fun sparkly treasures from the dollar store- cheap rings with green stones (green is our favourite colour) and some plastic diamonds.

Magical Rings

This is the first summer I haven’t signed her up for day camp since the summer after kindergarten. Actually, I DID sign her up for day camp that summer but a strike closed the community center and cancelled the camp. Anyway. I’m hoping to find fun things to keep her occupied for the next two months while I’m working so she doesn’t end up watching tv for eight hours a day, so if anyone has any ideas send them my way!

Weekend Parking

My ten-day-weekend didn’t get off to a very auspicious start, in spite of my amazing gold-star Dance Central performance on Friday night.

Gold Stars
just pretend I wasn’t doing it on easy for greater effect

Saturday was cold and rainy and miserable. Taylor and I went to the bank and ended up soaked to the skin. I had to dog my wool duffel coat out to wear to the farmer’s market, it was so freezing!

Real Strawberries

It cleared up in the afternoon, so once Sym had been picked up I dragged Taylor around the city looking for nail polish and more Unicornos. Unfortunately the Unicornos had all sold out again, but I did buy white and red glitter nail polish for the Canada Day nails I’m doing later this week.

We also took Kichou and Georgie to play at Emery Barnes dog park. I spent a lot of time there this weekend.

Sunday was another story: gorgeous and sunny and AWESOME!

Summertime

I’d extracted a promise from Taylor that we’d go to the beach on any sunny days, but we wanted to bring the dogs so we decided to go to the beach-adjacent park instead.

A Floridian friend once expressed disbelief that it was warm enough in Canada to go to the beach, this picture is for her.

As usual, I mostly took pictures of my dog.

Taylor was also there.

Georgie on my Butt @ Sunset Beach Park

As was I. Or my butt, at least!

After the beach Taylor had to go to bed since he had work that night, but I had a whole evening of freedom- Sym was staying over at her dad’s house. I napped, and took Georgie to Emery Barnes again (and unfortunately didn’t take my camera because there were LITRALLY the most adorable dogs there), and finished off the weekend by rewatching season one and part of season two of Parks & Rec. Of course, I didn’t REALLY finish my weekend because I’m off all this week. Yay ten-day-weekend!

The Beginnening

Ten Day Weekend
ten-day weekend: hour one

I finished work an hour ago so I’m officially on vacation until July 5th at 7:45am. I’m starting things right with a sweet, sweet can of Canadian beer. It says it’s best enjoyed at 7-10°C, but mine is significantly warmer since I LITRALLY can’t wait for it to chill after the hellish week I’ve had.

Happy vacation to me!

You Say Weekend, I Say Sick Day

Okay so OF CORSE I got sick on the long weekend. OF COURSE. The worst part is I got sick from Taylor, not the daycare kids. Clearly offices are bigger germ havens than a house full of literally snot-nosed kids.

Luckily after that gorgeous, sunny Friday (which I am SO GLAD I took off, btw) the weather has been pretty crummy so I don’t feel guilty about spending the whole rest of the weekend on the couch watching tv and making friendship bracelets.

Too Many Friendship Bracelets

Yeah. I mean, I did do some other things; Taylor and I tried to go see Bridesmaids but it was sold out, and I walked my dog a bunch of times and we went to Starbucks when a skunk trapped us outside, but mostly we just watched shows, like half the first season of Deadwood and the entire third season of Parks & Rec, which I watched with Sym last night after Taylor went to bed. THE ENTIRE THIRD SEASON IN ONE SITTING. It was pretty glorious.

Anyway now I have to tidy my squalorous apartment; it’s weird how doing nothing makes such a mess.

Also, don’t forget today is the last day to enter to win a glitter garland! You have until 11pm PST to enter.
