Some Things

Cable Knit Sweater
me earlier this week, when my eyes still worked

Now that I’ve been to the doctor for antibiotic eyedrops & can see again, here’s a selection of things from the week.

Sailor Moon Cats
this week Sailor Moon was really big in our house

Symphony’s dad was away in Alberta all week for work, so that meant she was here every day, as was the dog. It was awesome having them both around, but I’m so used to the schedule we usually have it seemed to make the week really long somehow. Like a whole week of Wednesdays.

Yellow Cucumber
a yellow cucumber, who knew this was even a thing?

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it in this blog, but Taylor has a fairly gnarly form of seborrheic dermatitis (it’s a skin condition) and nothing really ever seems to help. He recently made some dietary changes to try to get it under control, but after some research on my part and discussion, he decided to just go whole-hog and cut out everything that could be triggering it, at least temporarily. This week has been a kind of “last hurrah” of sushi, poutine, pie and beer, before starting six weeks of pretty much nothing but vegetables, fruits (except no citrus or strawberries) and brown rice.

Ombre Banner
my latest, greatest idea: ombre glitter banners

On Wednesday I was working on a banner for a customer in a particular colour scheme, when I had a brilliant burst of inspiration on how to make it even more amazing.

Happy Friday everyone!

It Came From My Eyeball

Way back in time on the internet, a certain blogger *cough*kdiddy*cough* posted an extreme close-up photograph of her diseased eyeball. I’m not gonna do that. You’re welcome.

Last night when I was reading Sym her bedtime chapter of Harry Potter (the chapter of Goblet of Fire where Voldemort gets his body back, perfect reading for bedtime), my left eye started watering incontrollably. Just watering and watering. It was making me crazy, and it kept it up all evening, until I went to bed. At three am I woke up and discovered it was gooped shut, and when I managed to pry it open my vision was all blurry and obstructed. I stumbled to the bathroom mirror and confirm my suspicions.

I am suffering from THE HEARTBREAK OF CONJUNCTIVITIS.

Gross. GROSS. Pink eye is the biggest drag ever, and it’s one of the diseases that the health authority mandates can’t be hanging out untreated in a child care setting. If the kids get it they can’t come (although I did once have a parent send her child to daycare with such a bad case of pink eye that it was like there were rivers of green snot pouring down his cheeks, yuck), and if I get it the kids can’t come. I had the text all my clients first thing this morning and ask them to keep their kids at home, at least until I go to the doctor. So inconvenient for them, but thankfully they were all very understanding (most people are when you tell them you have pus oozing out of your face).

The worst part is I know EXACTLY where, when and why I got this pinkeye. Not from any of the kids, and not from having a cold (did you know colds can spread up the inside of your face to your eyes and give you viral conjunctivitis? It’s true!), but from my own stupidity. See, I RARELY wear makeup. It’s just not suited to my life and tbh I don’t really care that much. So I rarely think about makeup, and I certainly never think about replacing old, old, old items. But on Wednesday night we went out for dinner with an old fried of mine, and I actually wore makeup for once. Without even thinking twice I swiped on a couple of coats of some Lancome Hypnose (aka the best mascara everrrrrrr) waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara I bought to wear on my wedding day in case I cried. My wedding day which was in March of 2009.

Oops.

So. LESSON LEARNED. I will be tossing the offending mascara immediately and picking up a new tube- luckily the doctor’s office I’m going to is right next to a drugstore, which is convenient for both having prescriptions filled AND replacing bacteria-riddled mascara tubes (fun fact: in Canada you can buy Lancome mascara at the drugstore. One time on a trip to Seattle I forgot mine at home and I was SHOCKED and APPALLED that I had to go to Macy’s to buy a new one).

Beautiful Georgie

As promised, not a picture of my crusty, seeping eyeball.

A Clean Start

I’ve mentioned here recently that I’ve been in a rut, a slump, a funk, whatever. I’ve been feeling very :/ about a lot of things, and one of them is this blog. I’m sick of my posts! I’m sick of my pictures! I’m sick of thinking up titles! But most of all, I’m (was) sick of the layout, so last night I steeled myself for a huge hassle and changed it.

New New Blog Layout

It’s not one hundred percent perfectly how I want it, but it’s pretty close! I think it’s a lot cleaner looking than the old layout, which is definitely what I was going for. I’d love to hear any thoughts or feedback you guys might have about it, and as a thank you here’s a Georgie for your troubles.

The Curse of the Gym

IMG_0428

I have the worst luck with the gym. Every time I say I’m going to start going again, I go once and then suffer some calamitous event. I throw my back out and can barely walk, or I get strep throat, or I fall down the stairs at the gym when leaving after my workout and sprain my ankle. Every time I lose all my gym momentum and it’s months before I go back again- just to suffer a new setback.

Well. In August Taylor spent a lot of time talking about how he wanted to start going to the gym again, so I decided it would be supportive and helpful if I went too. Labour Day weekend I strapped my running shoes on for the first time in months and hit up Fitness World for some treadmill time. Aaaaaaaaaaand my shoes (pictured above), my beloved foot clouds, which are neither too old or too new, gave me huge horrible blisters, one of which popped and seeped and oozed and got horribly infected. WHAT THE HECK. It’s been really painful and gross, but it’s finally almost better. Just in time too; I think the weather is about to turn and I won’t be able to wear my flip-flops anymore (my feet are like Regina George on Kal-teen bars” flip-flops are all that fit me right now).

Hopefully I be able to re-restart going back to the gym this weekend, so please stay tuned for my next disaster.

In semi-related gym news, Taylor went yesterday morning and there was an older man running full-tilt on the treadmill while watchign full-on hardcore porn on his iPad. PEOPLE THESE DAYS idek.

No Woman is an Island

Out of all the annoying things in my apartment, one of the most annoying was the kitchen island. The top had an overhang so it’s like you should be able to sit at it, but the overhang was so shallow that it was impossible and/or uncomfortable for anyone over, say, 4’7″. Since I’m 5’9″ and Taylor is 6’4″, it was pretty much unacceptable!

Not a Sick Mess Anymore!New Kitchen Stools

I’d been trying to come up with a cost-effective solution for this problem for a while, and a few weeks back I bought the stools pictured above so it was really time to get to it! On Sunday Taylor and I made a trip to Ikea and I picked up three $9 Vika Amon desk tops. A little time with a cordless drill and a screwdriver and voila!

New Island
New Island

I stupidly didn’t take a proper “before” picture but the old counter was about 75 x 145cm, and the new one is 100 x 180cm. SO MUCH SURFACE AREA I CAN’T HANDLE IT OMG. I’m planning on putting clear vinyl over it for protection and putting a couple brackets for extra support but all in all I’m pretty thrilled with how it turned out!

Some other weekend stuff:

Cocktail Party
Cocktail Party

My friend Mandy sent me green (lime), blue (wildberry) and purplish-brown (chocolate) maraschino cherries and Taylor and I tried some of them in drinks this weekend. He had rum & pineapple juice with a blue cherry and I had gin, St Germain, Rose’s lime cordial and club soda with a green one. To be honest I don’t actually like maraschino cherries so I gave mine to Taylor to eat. They look cool though!

Little Twin Stars World

A few months ago I bought Sym a Re-ment Little Twin Starsblind box toy and she became OBSESSED. I rarely go to the store here that carries them but I happened to be in the neighborhood this weekend so I bought her a couple more and she made this little world for them.

Sym & Little Twin Stars World

Today was the first “day” of school, but there’s no classes; the kids just get their attendance taken so the school can figure out the enrolment. I’m back to work after a lovely long weekend, I’m not super excited about it but OH WELL.

Pets on the Couch

At least there’s pets.

Huge Post of Epicness

I thought about doing a bunch of separate posts with all the stuff I’ve been meaning to blog about this week, but then I though EFF IT so now you get this huge post of epicness! Enjoy!

Popsicles!

Popsicle Party Banner

First of all, even though I haven’t been posting them, I HAVE been making popsicles.

Orange Popsicle

Fresh squeezed orange juice popsicles! These were Sym’s pick, and quite delicious, although A LOT of work.

Blackberry Smoothie Popsicle

Leftover blackberry smoothie popsicles! I made these with the smoothie that Sym didn’t finish and I accidentally almost turned into jam.

Cherry Popsicle

Super-sweet cherry syrup popsicles! I don’t remember what I made this cherry syrup for, I think I just had some cherries that were getting old? WHO KNOWS? I think I must have put in a ton of sugar though, these were INTENSELY SWEET.

Arts & Crafts!
I’ve been making some really fantastic glitter banners and friendship bracelets recently. I did a Sailor Moon-themed craft swap with Rhiannon, and made her a banner of Luna, Diana and Artemis’ heads

Sailor Moon Cat Glitter Banner

… and Outer Senshi friendship bracelets.

Sailor Senshi Bracelets

I’m very excited to see what she’s made for me, so look for a post on that in the future!

I’m also really pleased with the banner I made for my friend Sonia, which has her name in Hindi. I’ve had people ask me before why I don’t use pre-cut letters and shapes for my banners, and this is why.

Sonia

Don’t forget to “like” my shop on facebook and remember, there’s less than a week left to get 15% off your order with the code UNICORN15

With the other friendship bracelets I’ve made recently, I’ve been experimenting with metallic embroidery floss. It’s tricky to use- you have to knot it fairly tightly and that tends to make the bracelets curl up on themselves. I’ve found using a mix of half-metallic and half-regular works best.

Metallic Friendship Bracelets

The blue and silver one on the right was my favourite, but I lost it on Wednesday night, cry cry. Hopefully someone found it and gave it a good home!

Sym's Mini Arm Party

These I made for Sym, you can see here that I put chains and clasps on them instead of just tying them on, except I’m not super adept at it yet and they sometimes fall apart (which is how I think I lost my blue one). I still have a couple more that I made for myself, a purple and gold one, and an all-gold one with vintage aurora borealis crystal and gold-tone metal filigree beads (the later aren’t visible), pictured here with my silver Tiffany bracelet and my brand-new and amazing evil eye bracelet from Hippie Speedball.

Tiny Arm Party

Vacation!
Seeing as how I’ve been on vacation this week, I managed to find time for a quick getaway to New York.

Me in New York

OH WAIT NO I DIDN’T. But while I was out shopping on Wednesday I stumbled across my absolutely favorite show in the history of tv being filmed. THAT’S RIGHT, FRINGE!! Unfortunately there was no Joshua Jackson BUT I stood across the street like a giant dork and took pictures of Anna Torv and John Noble, aka Olivia Dunham and Walter Bishop, shooting a short scene where they walked fifty feet up Burrard street. Over and over again. tbh working on a tv show looks boring as hell.

Walter & Olivia

Vancouver Canadians!

Sunset Over Nat Bailey Stadium

Later that Day Taylor and I headed out to Nat Bailey Stadium (or I guess it’s now Scotiabank Field and Nat Bailey Stadium? Whatever) to catch a Canadians game. We’d been a couple of times before, but this was the first time I’d ever paid for tickets, and they are super affordable. Unfortunately the season is basically over, but next summer I definitely want to go to more games. If you are like me and like sports you can scream at while you drink beer, then this is definitely for you.

Taylor Turns 32!

Happy Birthday Taylor Banner

Of course, this weeks most important event was yesterday, when my darling and adorable husband celebrated his thirty-second birthday. He’s been working from home this week, so he slept for most of the day while Sym and I baked and hung decorations.

Cake and PresentsSparklers!

This is the second layer cake I’ve made (the first was the rainbow cake earlier this summer) and it turned out really well! I still need to work on making my icing look pretty, but the inside was SPECTACULAR.

Blue Gradient Cake

We had a yummy dinner of our traditional Thursday night poutine & Dr Peppers, then presents, then cake & milk, and after Sym went to bed, tv shows and beer.

The Birthday Man

Love him ♥

Anyway, that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to this week! On Monday it back to work for me (incidentally, today is the fifth anniversary of Starlight Family Childcare! Also the longest I’ve ever held a job, haha), but at least I still have this afternoon and the weekend of freedom left!

Cat's Pissed

Happy Friday! (But not from Claire, she hates everything.0

Oops

Soooo I’ve been a terrible blogger this week. I actually have TONS of posts to make, but apparently being on vacation means I’m too busy doing nothing to blog (although today I’m too busy baking and decorating because it’s Taylor’s birthday!). Soon, I promise! Until then, please enjoy this video of a baby skunk chewing on a McDOnald’s McChicken Sauce packet outside my window.
