Some Things

Cable Knit Sweater
me earlier this week, when my eyes still worked

Now that I’ve been to the doctor for antibiotic eyedrops & can see again, here’s a selection of things from the week.

Sailor Moon Cats
this week Sailor Moon was really big in our house

Symphony’s dad was away in Alberta all week for work, so that meant she was here every day, as was the dog. It was awesome having them both around, but I’m so used to the schedule we usually have it seemed to make the week really long somehow. Like a whole week of Wednesdays.

Yellow Cucumber
a yellow cucumber, who knew this was even a thing?

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it in this blog, but Taylor has a fairly gnarly form of seborrheic dermatitis (it’s a skin condition) and nothing really ever seems to help. He recently made some dietary changes to try to get it under control, but after some research on my part and discussion, he decided to just go whole-hog and cut out everything that could be triggering it, at least temporarily. This week has been a kind of “last hurrah” of sushi, poutine, pie and beer, before starting six weeks of pretty much nothing but vegetables, fruits (except no citrus or strawberries) and brown rice.

Ombre Banner
my latest, greatest idea: ombre glitter banners

On Wednesday I was working on a banner for a customer in a particular colour scheme, when I had a brilliant burst of inspiration on how to make it even more amazing.

Happy Friday everyone!

A Clean Start

I’ve mentioned here recently that I’ve been in a rut, a slump, a funk, whatever. I’ve been feeling very :/ about a lot of things, and one of them is this blog. I’m sick of my posts! I’m sick of my pictures! I’m sick of thinking up titles! But most of all, I’m (was) sick of the layout, so last night I steeled myself for a huge hassle and changed it.

New New Blog Layout

It’s not one hundred percent perfectly how I want it, but it’s pretty close! I think it’s a lot cleaner looking than the old layout, which is definitely what I was going for. I’d love to hear any thoughts or feedback you guys might have about it, and as a thank you here’s a Georgie for your troubles.

No Woman is an Island

Out of all the annoying things in my apartment, one of the most annoying was the kitchen island. The top had an overhang so it’s like you should be able to sit at it, but the overhang was so shallow that it was impossible and/or uncomfortable for anyone over, say, 4’7″. Since I’m 5’9″ and Taylor is 6’4″, it was pretty much unacceptable!

Not a Sick Mess Anymore!New Kitchen Stools

I’d been trying to come up with a cost-effective solution for this problem for a while, and a few weeks back I bought the stools pictured above so it was really time to get to it! On Sunday Taylor and I made a trip to Ikea and I picked up three $9 Vika Amon desk tops. A little time with a cordless drill and a screwdriver and voila!

New Island
New Island

I stupidly didn’t take a proper “before” picture but the old counter was about 75 x 145cm, and the new one is 100 x 180cm. SO MUCH SURFACE AREA I CAN’T HANDLE IT OMG. I’m planning on putting clear vinyl over it for protection and putting a couple brackets for extra support but all in all I’m pretty thrilled with how it turned out!

Some other weekend stuff:

Cocktail Party
Cocktail Party

My friend Mandy sent me green (lime), blue (wildberry) and purplish-brown (chocolate) maraschino cherries and Taylor and I tried some of them in drinks this weekend. He had rum & pineapple juice with a blue cherry and I had gin, St Germain, Rose’s lime cordial and club soda with a green one. To be honest I don’t actually like maraschino cherries so I gave mine to Taylor to eat. They look cool though!

Little Twin Stars World

A few months ago I bought Sym a Re-ment Little Twin Starsblind box toy and she became OBSESSED. I rarely go to the store here that carries them but I happened to be in the neighborhood this weekend so I bought her a couple more and she made this little world for them.

Sym & Little Twin Stars World

Today was the first “day” of school, but there’s no classes; the kids just get their attendance taken so the school can figure out the enrolment. I’m back to work after a lovely long weekend, I’m not super excited about it but OH WELL.

Pets on the Couch

At least there’s pets.

Creeped

I was trying to take a picture of this orange glitter unicorn to show Lillian when I was photobombed by this gross mustachioed creep!

Creeped

lol ew he is the worst.

Any Minute Now

I swear these dogs are thisclose to becoming best friends.

Fuzzy Frenemies
Fuzzy Kisses

Since it’s September 1st, I figured it was about time I got started on some Halloween crafts. I’m planning on some spooky glitter banners, but I need to get more black and white glitter sheets, and try to suss out some orange- for some reason it’s basically impossible for me to find orange glitter! I thought I found some but as it turned out it was orange glitter paint, and it’s not working the way I want. You have to do a billion coats and once you put down one, the glitter in the successive coats just gloms on to where there is already glitter, leaving some parts chunky and clumpy and others patchy and bare.

ANYWAY in the meantime I’ve whipped up some micro-bunting (remember micro bunting?) in Halloween colours. These are 12″ long and priced oh-so-reasonably at just $1.80, although if I’d thought ahead a bit more I’d have made them 13″ for even more spookiness.

Three Halloween Micro Buntings

In black, orange, white or any colour you want!

Speaking of crafts, my friend Rhiannon pointed out my space shirt tutorial was featured on craftzine.com today!

My Space Shirt on Craftzine.com

I swear, I never need to make another craft or write another blog post. I’ll just coast on that one shirt for the rest of my internet career.

Last Day

After having the last whole week off of work, it’s hard to go back today. Happily, Taylor and I gave the weekend a nice finish by taking the dogs for a giant walk through Stanley Park/the Seawall. We often go from Yaletown to Sunset Beach/English Bay, and a few weeks ago we went from Coal Harbour to Lumberman’s Arch. This time we went by Lost Lagoon to Second Beach and then around the Seawall to Lumberman’s Arch to other way, past Third Beach, Siwash Rock and Under the Lion’s Gate Bridge. Taylor says that next weekend he wants to got the whole way around the park in one trip but idk if the little dogs will be up for it (by which I mean me).

Fair Play

Instead of playing Dance Central for Family Fun Friday, this week Taylor, Sym and I went to The Fair at the PNE. It was pretty much the most fun ever; we ended up staying for five hours! We saw the Superdogs, ate all the things, played some games, went on some rides… I think it was the most fun I’ve ever had there!

Poutine Hotdog

It was kind of hard for me to find non-sugary stuff to eat since I’m not eating meat, but Taylor enjoyed this poutine hotdog with fries, bacon, cheese, green onions and gravy.

Deep-fried Oreos

Deep-fried Oreos! I also got a deep-fried Pop-Tart with whipped cream, Fruity Pebbles and rainbow sprinkles but the picture disappeared from my phone, LAME. EDIT THE PICTURE UNDISAPPEARED YAY!

Fluffy-Footed Pigeons

There were all kinds of fancy pigeons; I liked these fluffy-footed ones the best.

Sym & I with a Navy bomb-disposal robot.

My only complaints were:
1. There were NO deep-fried jelly beans this year! The website said there was so I was very disappointed.
2. Both Taylor and Sym are chickens so neither of them would go on the roller coaster or ferris wheel with me. Sym would only go on the kiddie rides and Taylor wouldn’t go on anything! Hopefully next year Sym is a little braver, she’s already tall enough to go on everything so she just needs to courage up!
